Cat Scratch Fever Symptoms

Cat scratch disease, also called cat scratch fever is an infection caused by bacteria that is carried in cat saliva. Cat scratch disease usually occurs when an effected cat scratches or bites a person, usually a child. Cats can get the bacteria on his claws after licking himself. This bacterium is also known as Bartonella hensel.

There is little cause for alarm though because the likelihood of contracting the disease and it being very serious is slim. An estimated 2.5 cases per 100,000 people in the U.S. per year contract it. Those with poor immune systems are at the greatest risk for complications.

Cat scratch disease is also known as cat scratch fever. This disease strikes people who are infected by the Bartonella henselae bacteria. In almost all cases, cat scratch disease occurs when the person was scratched or bitten by his cat. The cat itself does not catch cat scratch disease.

To avoid being infected by someone else’s cat, follow the same general guidelines listed above. If you come across a stray cat or a cat that you do not know, do not touch or play with the cat. If you decide to take a stray cat in, wear long sleeves and pants to protect your skin and take the cat to your veterinarian to be tested and treated for any possible diseases.

Cat scratch disease is a malady spread by cats, but that affects only humans; it’s also called cat scratch fever. Disease symptoms are most frequently diagnosed in the colder winter and fall months of the year for reasons scientists don’t understand; it’s possible that cats are more likely to be indoors at this time, increasing the chance of human exposure overall to feline diseases.

The lymph nodes of the neck and upper limbs of the infected human, may experience a mild infection at the central point of the injury, or scratch, and will become swollen. Other symptoms that may accompany this disease, or infection, will be headaches, a fever, sudden fatigue, and a loss of appetite.

A very beautiful cat is your pet and you are fortunate to have such a cute pet. You feel happy watching the huge fur over his pinkish epidermis. If your pet begins to meow with a rough and husky voice it is quite natural that you are worried. Yes, get ready to accept that your cat is not well.

The rotovirus is a viral infection found in babies and young children. Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and fever. The virus acts by attacking the lining of the small intestine. This results in dehydration from excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes. Often these symptoms will last from three to ten days.

Lymphoma is a very difficult disease if watched from the symptoms perspective. That is to say that besides being quite “ugly”, these lymphoma signs can also be attributed to other medical conditions as well. Cat scratch fever has similar symptoms to lymphoma, making this disease even that more difficult to diagnose.

Egyptian Mau – The facts every owner of this cat breed should know

A breed of cat as old as recorded history, the Egyptian Mau (‘Mau’ means ‘cat’ in Egyptian) can be seen in the artwork of the ancient Egyptians. It is thought that Egyptian Maus are descended from species of the African Wild Cat. In that culture, the cats were worshiped, protected by laws and mummified. The Egyptian Mau is the only breed of cat that has naturally occurring spots on its short coat. Found in a random pattern on the fur, these spots can also be found on the skin. The coat can be silver, bronze or smoke colored with variations occurring between these three colors.

Egyptian Maus have striking green eyes and an unusual flap of skin extending from the flank to the back knee, which allows for agility. It is the fastest breed of cat, able to reach speeds of more than thirty miles per hour. Average adult male Egyptian Maus will reach weights between ten to fourteen pounds. Females will average six to ten pounds.

Egyptian Maus are described as talkative almost musical and have very distinct vocalizations. They are curious cats and like to explore, but they can also be lap cats, preferring the relative comfort and safety of a warm and friendly lap. Egyptian Maus are very friendly with their families and enjoy their company immensely, but are wary of strangers. They are also known to wag their tails like a dog when happy.

Egyptian Maus have some important differences from other domesticated cats. They are more sensitive to temperatures and prefer very warms climates. Egyptian Maus are also more sensitive to medicines and anesthesia. They have a longer than average gestational period. The normal period for cats is sixty-nine days but seventy-three days is still considered normal for an Egyptian Mau. This breed is also prone to food allergies, hot spots, cardiomyopothy and feline asthma. There is a website that has great information on Egyptian Mau and most other breeds of cats. It has details that pertain to a cat breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

The Truth about Cat Myths

Just when you think you already know a lot about cats, you may still find it difficult to tell whether a thing about cats is a fact or a myth. Read on to know more about the real deal about common cat misconceptions.

Cats and dogs are eternal enemies.
Fact: Contrary to popular belief, cats can actually develop harmonious relationships with dogs and other pets as well. They can also make very good pets in the home. If you take good care of your pet cat, you will find that it can be the most loving and comforting creature you will ever have.
Indoor cats are unhappy. Fact: Although it may be true in many cases that older cats who have been outdoors can be unhappy when kept indoors, any indoor cat can be happy as long as you give them different stuffs that they can spend time and have fun playing with. Give your furry friend toys and other stuffs, but be sure that these are safe for your pet.
Cats can take care of themselves and are low maintenance. Fact: while cats may project an image of being independent, this does not necessarily mean that they should be given the least care. It certainly is not true that cats can live up to nine lives either. In fact, the average life of stray, undomesticated cats is only three years. Cats also need proper care, nourishment and attention too.
De-clawing and trimming nails are one and the same.
Fact: De-clawing or onychectomy is done by surgically amputating the first joint of each of a cats toe. This procedure is performed so that owners will not have to worry about annoying cat scratches anymore. However, animal rights advocates view this procedure as inhumane and cruel. De-clawing is not the same as mere trimming since the claws will just grow back after a while.

Female cats need kittens before neutering.
Fact: Female cats may have more serious risks when pregnant than when she is spayed. Although many people may want cats to produce kittens, the truth is that spaying can prevent uterine and mammary cancer, formation of ovarian cysts as well pregnancy complications that include malformed kittens and stillbirth. And if you find cat overpopulation alarming, spaying your female cat just might be your option.

Spayed male cats have higher risks of UTIs.
Fact: Although a study showed that neutered cats had no bearing on the increase of the risks of UTIs, a study conducted by the Win Feline Foundation revealed that a spayed male cat aged 10 to 15 years old had the highest risk of developing certain uroliths or crystals. When measuring the risks of acquiring UTIs between spayed and non-spayed cats, the former is better.

Cat Condos Exercise And Fun For Our Feline Friends

Having been rescuing and befriending abandoned cats for over 26 years, I have become very cognizant of the importance of providing and maintaining our furry friends’ once active outdoor lifestyles to their new indoor environment. My current three “wonder cats” – Mikko, Panther and Buddy – used to be very active outdoors; some activities were of a “fending one’s turf”, resulting in the showing of “battle scars”; some were more of a playful nature, ie. running, chasing and climbing. Deciding to transition my kids to be solely indoor inhabitants was due mostly to their well-being and overall health. Because of this I was concerned about how to maintain their active lifestyles, maintain a healthy body weight, and offer a quality of life which was both fun and relaxing.

After succeeding in coaxing my guys indoors (it took me 2 YEARS to finally get Panther to trust me enough to come indoors, and even then continued to be a “process”!), I wanted to offer them a quality of life where I felt I wasn’t depriving them in any way by keeping them indoors, while maintaining their health.

Along with investigating the most optimal nutritional needs for my guys, I wanted them to get the most out of indoor exercising tools. I researched and discovered that cat condos, trees and beds (also known as furniture) offered a specific place for cats to call their own, in addition to providing them with fun, relaxation and most importantly exercise, due to the climbing, jumping, chasing and scratching (most coming with scratching posts) that seem to be common activities.

Out of this research I decided to start my own online business specializing in cat trees, condos and beds, both self-standing and wall mounted. I also have included on my website litter box cabinets with additional drawers, for those humans who prefer a more “hidden look” with cat’s “bathrooms” from the standard litter box areas.

I totally love watching my three felines in their cat tree. I have found on many occasions I turn the tv (and other “distractions”) off, and watch the “kids go at it”, they seeming to be totally immersed in their “jungle gym”. Knowing they are all having fun, and getting their exercise at the same time, makes me one happy dad.

Persian Cat Adoption – Pros And Cons

The Persian cat is the most popular breed of cat. Nearly everyone recognizes the distinctive look of the Persian – the round face, squashed nose, big eyes, small ears, stocky legs and – of course – the lovely long hair.

If you’re thinking of adopting a Persian cat, you need to consider if it’s the right breed for you. This article goes through the potential pros and cons of owning this breed.

Pros:

Very placid and nice-natured
Adaptable to change – so will cope well with house moves, family additions, new pets etc.
Good with other pets including dogs
Good with children
Gentle and loving
Playful and confident but not too boisterous
Not too vocal – most have quiet, melodic voices
Usually happy to live as indoor cats

Cons:

Long hair needs combing on nearly a daily basis to prevent matting
Occasional bathing usually needed to keep the fur in its best condition
Eyes prone to excessive watering, so they need wiping usually on a daily basis. May also need cleaning regularly with a special fluid as dark staining can occur
May need to occasionally cut knots out of hair or even get areas on the body shaved if heavy matting occurs
May need occasional help with hygiene especially if they get diarrhea, as it can be difficult for them to clean their long fur thoroughly
Persians need human attention, so they aren’t suitable for anyone who can’t spend time with them every day
These cats don’t like being left alone for long periods of time. If you’re out during the day, it’s better if there’s another pet living with you too that will provide company when you’re not there

As long as you have the time and inclination, a lot of the cons listed here aren’t really negatives. Most Persian cat owners get great pleasure caring for and spending time with their pets. If you want a lovely natured cat that needs a bit more care than most other breeds, the Persian could be the best choice for you.

Incorporating Homemade Cat Food Recipes In Your Cats Diet

To many people who own cats, these pets are very special to them. Cat owners go to great lengths to care for their animals, but the reality is that there is often one area where many well-meaning cat owners miss the mark, and it is perhaps one of the most important things of all and that is the food they serve. With all of the chemicals and processing that many of the top commercial brand cat foods use when manufacturing cat food, it is little wonder that food related death and illness in cats has been on the rise. If you care for your cat and you truly wish that they only have the best of everything that you can provide, then you might want to seriously consider changing their menu to include homemade food. To do this you are going to need to find a few homemade cat food recipes.

Before you dive head long into finding recipes you can make at home for your cat, you need to make sure you are ready for this level of commitment. The truth is that unless you are committed to doing it right, you shouldn’t try doing it at all. Finding recipes and preparing homemade cat food is not a difficult thing to do, but as with any change, it will be a process, and if this is too much for you then you really need to strongly consider if this is really the thing for you.

Another thing that you will need to consider is that while you may be very excited about the recipes you have acquired and you may be looking forward to trying them, but you need to understand that your cat may not. This can be a rather stark change for your cat and cats, like people, don’t always handle change very well. That is why you must be committed to this process. You may find that you take the time to prepare a quality and balanced meal for your cat only to have your cat simply walk away from the food showing no interest in eating it. That is why, in some cases, you will need to start out slow in introducing homemade meals. It may take some time to transition from commercial foods to homemade foods, but if you stick with it, you will eventually have success.

The reality is that commercial cat food can be very dangerous and possibly fatal in some cases, and if the well-being of your cat is important to you, you will want to feed them only the best. That is why finding and using homemade cat food recipes is so important to having your cat enjoy as long of a life as possible. You will be happy you did and more importantly, your cat will be happy as well.

Cat Insurance For Behavioural Problems

Some cats groom themselves to excess and in doing so damage their hair and skin. Cheap pet insurance policies dont always offer cover for the treatment of behavioural problems, so when you get a pet insurance quote you may want to check that your policy includes behavioural problems such as excessive grooming.

A habit of excessive self-grooming could indicate an underlying medical condition, but it could also be a behavioural problem that develops as a result of anxiety. Although it is natural for cats to groom themselves, it is important to see excessive grooming as a warning sign to respond to.

According to a survey done in 2008 by the PFMA, 7% of people keep cats because they are easy to maintain. However, cats that take their self-maintenance to extremes can end up licking, nibbling, and even chewing at their hair and skin until they develop skin irritations. The rough texture of a cats tongue can make this problem even worse, leading to hair loss and skin inflammation wherever the cat has been obsessively grooming.

Some cats that develop this habit only do a little damage to their coat, but in some cases the effects can be extreme, leading to ulcers and thick scabs covering the majority of the animals body.

Although this fixation on cleaning is sometimes due to an underlying medical condition, in many cases stress is the cause. As cats are territorial, the introduction of a new member to the household can be extremely stressful. Whether this addition is a new cat, a new flat-mate or a new baby, your pet will have to readjust to alterations in the group dynamic, and may use grooming as part of this alteration process.

Separation anxiety can be another trigger for excessive grooming. Cats are well known for being independent, but this reputation isnt always accurate. Some pets become extremely attached to their owners and suffer from acute separation anxiety when they are left alone. This anxiety could lead your cat to damage themselves with excessive grooming.

In addition to emotional factors such as these, excessive grooming can also be due to medical conditions such as parasites, fungal infections or allergic reactions. Before your pet can be treated, you need to know whether your cats excessive grooming is a response to an underlying medical condition, or if the excessive grooming has caused a medical condition. The best way to find out is to take your cat to a vet.

If the underlying cause is a behavioural issue, your vet may refer you to a specialist. Many pet insurance policies will provide up to 250 per period of insurance for the cost of specialist treatment. With the correct medical care it shouldnt take long for your cats skin irritation to clear, leaving both you and your cat stress-free.
